I’m in the back of our rental, crammed in like a sardine. At five feet, ten inches, I’m not a short girl, but considering both H and Preston are well over six feet, it’s where I am, kitty-corner from Preston, watching the expression change on his face the closer we get to the medical supply store.

He’s biting his lip. I have absolutely no idea what his financial situation is, and I’ve already warned H about offering his help, and as we pull in front of a nondescript store, he’s out of the car before H can put it in park.

“Why don’t you stay put? I have everything ordered and scheduled for delivery. Just need to pay the bill. I’ll be back in a sec.”

Hardy begins to argue, and with a small tap on his shoulder, he remains quiet, and Preston runs into the store quickly.

“You know I could make it easy on him.” H moves the rearview mirror in order to see me as he talks.

“But would it be making things easy on him? Going out on a very shaky but obvious limb, his pride is all he has left at this juncture. And stripping him of it can be very dangerous.”

For the next thirty minutes, we chat about everything and anything that isn’t Preston Kinley, avoiding the subject that in just over three weeks time, it’ll be impossible to let him go after what we’ve shared.

The half hour turns to an hour, and after another fifteen minutes, we both contemplate checking in on him.

“H, baby, let me. I think it’ll be a little easier because I wasn’t born with a silver spoon, never knowing the security that comes with money.” I have to remind H of it from time to time because he doesn’t possess empathy like I do.

“You’re right. It just sucks, that’s all.” He’s not wrong, and Preston would most likely be one to agree with him. No one asked for this, or for the son to be the caregiver to the father.

I let myself into the store and immediately am met with raised voices, but as I get closer, it’s just one raised voice.

“I still don’t get it. In the past three days since I’ve ordered this bed, I was told my cost would be seven thousand, along with the electrical lifter and the disc. How has the cost changed so much in two days?”

“Preston, like I explained three times at this point, the cost was an error on the part of your father’s insurance. And because of this screw-up, I can offer you a ten-percent discount, with a monthly allotment being automatically deducted.”

There’s a smack of what I assume is Preston’s hand on a hard surface. “And what do I do when this was all I had to pay for the three items? This is it. I have nothing left, and I still have prescriptions to buy and a little girl to feed.”

“Preston, I’m so sorry. And if you need a longer payment plan, I’ll push it out further.
